It's been a wild ride for Josephine Foster, an artist that we have admired for quite a while now. Josephine is the most unique exponent of the underground folk revival that was occurring over the last decade or so. And yet she has always seemed to escape the mainstream spotlight. Thankfully. In a career that spans beyond a decade, the young songstress has made quite the discography. With over a dozen releases-each one of them very unique-it is easy to see why she has garnered critical acclaim but avoided the mainstream hype machine:
Josephine Foster does what Josephine Foster wants. It's that simple.
From the intensely psychedelic sounds of her power trio "The Supposed" to the herd-thinning selection of unorthodox interpretations of 19th century German Lieder (on 2006's "A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing"), her choices of material to compose and perform has always been eclectic. Children's songs and murder ballads may seem like strange bedfellows, but not on a Josephine Foster record. It is amazing that one voice can convey beauty and despair in one single breath. Haunting and bewitching, calming and soothing, her performances can take you anywhere she wants to lead you.
Over the years, Josephine has had many homes for her music... Windbell, Bo' Weavil Recordings, Locust Music... and, as of a few years ago, she signed on with Fire Records (new home to Mark Mulcahy, old hood for Spacemen 3, to name a few.)
As of late, Josephine Foster had been recording old Spanish folk songs with her very talented husband Victor Herrero (and his band) in their current homeland in the beautiful countryside of Spain. But her most recent release "Blood Rushing" is a mix of delicate songs inspired by her youth and young experiences.
Josephine Foster has a long history of performing in New Haven. We've been lucky enough to witness her shows, throughout her unique trajectory, in a variety of rooms here in the Elm City. It only seemed to make sense to host this performance at Marsh Botanical Garden, with support from our partners Intercambio.
Opening the show will be Dan Greene, esteemed Connecticut singer/songwriter, painter, playwright, poet, storyteller, teacher, and all-around-nice-guy. His musical output can be traced way back to the (now infamous) Butterflies of Love to his current musical group The Mountain Movers.
This will be a special evening! Please arrive early!
