It's been a wild ride for Josephine Foster, an artist that we have admired for quite a while now. Josephine is the most unique exponent of the underground folk revival that was occurring over the last decade or so. And yet she has always seemed to escape the mainstream spotlight. Thankfully. In a career that spans beyond a decade, the young songstress has made quite the discography. With over a dozen releases-each one of them very unique-it is easy to see why she has garnered critical acclaim but avoided the mainstream hype machine:

From the intensely psychedelic sounds of her power trio "The Supposed" to the herd-thinning selection of unorthodox interpretations of 19th century German Lieder (on 2006's "A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing"), her choices of material to compose and perform has always been eclectic. Children's songs and murder ballads may seem like strange bedfellows, but not on a Josephine Foster record. It is amazing that one voice can convey beauty and despair in one single breath. Haunting and bewitching, calming and soothing, her performances can take you anywhere she wants to lead you.

Over the years, Josephine has had many homes for her music... Windbell, Bo' Weavil Recordings, Locust Music... and, as of a few years ago, she signed on with Fire Records (new home to Mark Mulcahy, old hood for Spacemen 3, to name a few.)

As of late, Josephine Foster had been recording old Spanish folk songs with her very talented husband Victor Herrero (and his band) in their current homeland in the beautiful countryside of Spain. But her most recent release "Blood Rushing" is a mix of delicate songs inspired by her youth and young experiences.

Josephine Foster has a long history of performing in New Haven. We've been lucky enough to witness her shows, throughout her unique trajectory, in a variety of rooms here in the Elm City. It only seemed to make sense to host this performance at Marsh Botanical Garden, with support from our partners Intercambio.

Opening the show will be Dan Greene, esteemed Connecticut singer/songwriter, painter, playwright, poet, storyteller, teacher, and all-around-nice-guy. His musical output can be traced way back to the (now infamous) Butterflies of Love to his current musical group The Mountain Movers.

If you hung out way back in the day, during the days of our Sunday night concert series, neither one of these names is unfamiliar to you.
Eric Carbonara played a great show with Nalle, and Alexander Turnquist's "Faint At The Loudest Hour" CD was on heavy rotation.  Lots of time has passed since those days, and both have enjoyed some great successes.

This February solo guitarists Alexander Turnquist and Eric Carbonara embark on a Northeast US and Canadian tour. The two will be showcasing material from the recently released Imaginational Anthem Vol. 5 compilation series -(Tompkins Square Records), as well as their respective solo albums.  While these two VHF Record label mates are very different guitarists from one another, their combination on an evening's bill represents a wide-breadth of possibilities for the guitar. 

Over the years, Turnquist has released several critically-acclaimed records for VHF.

His most recent solo release, "Like Sunburned Snowflakes" is a vast departure of traditional styles in favor of pure finger-style harmonics. An effort for which Uncut magazine says "his technique is as orchestral as Nick Drake's... but applied to a minimalist logic with the weight of early Philip Glass or Steve Reich". Turnquist performs solo on an acoustic 12 string.

Carbonara, who has been called 'a composer who happens to play what he writes' (Bill Meyer - Dusted Magazine) has recently come off a sabbatical of gigging to focus on writing and composing new material, as well as for film, and interdisciplinary art. He most recently opened up mid-west tour dates for Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya and is currently finishing up material for a follow up to 2010's "The Paradise Abyss" as well as the critically-acclaimed duet with harpist Jesse Sparhawk "Sixty Strings". Eric performs live on 6-string nylon, 6-string banjo, as well as a 22-string Indian guitar, called an Upright Chaturangui.

Brought to you by Ephemeroptera, InterCambio, and Project Storefronts New Haven, this show has been a long time coming.  The exhibition depicts chapters from the third and fourth parts of Greene’s epic poem called The Monastery of the Heavenly Forest.  These images are conveyed with pastels, on various found objects that include furniture scraps and cardboard.  It is a stunning display of work and we recommend you come and see it before it comes down in mid-June.

Steve Krakow is a Chicago-based illustrator and writer, avant-garde musician, music historian and impresario. He is the editor of Drag City-published magazine Galactic Zoo Dossier, eponymous frontman for Plastic Crimewave Sound, founder of the Million Tongues Festival, and Vision Celestial Guitarkestra. He writes and illustrates the Secret History of Chicago Music newspaper column in the Chicago Reader and co-hosts WGN-AM's Secret History of Chicago Music series. He runs Drag City imprint label, Galactic Zoo Disk.
He is also a member of Moonrises, who will be bringing the psychedelic freak-out.

Very glad to announce the return of Glenn Jones to the Elm City. And while Glenn was here not too long ago, he has been very busy. First off, he's just released a new LP, his first on Thrill Jockey, and it is been getting great reviews. "The Wanting" finds him at the top of his game, it really doesn't get any better. This coming from a man who...
"Before embarking on his solo career, Glenn put out nine albums with the Boston based psych band Cul de Sac over the course of their 20 year history, some of which included collaborations with Damo Suzuki and John Fahey."

But it gets even better: Glenn is the editor of a new John Fahey archival collection, "Your Past Comes Back to Haunt You (The Fonotone Years 1958-1965)" out now on the esteemed Dust-to-Digital record label. Just when you think you've heard it all, he's back for more. Thankfully. And you catch him right here in New Haven, at Never Ending Books. Come see this masterful finger picker shred on his acoustic guitar, no amp necessary. Just a man, his six string, and some modified capos. This will not disappoint. Come one, come all.

Colorguard is the hidden gem of New Haven. Her sets are always unique and special. Some folks may remember Kryssi Battalene as one half of (the now de-funked) "Popeye's Garage", the Elm City's favorite off-the-map, off-the-radar, off-the-planet performance space that hosted many incredible shows in its brief life. Some folks may recognize her as the axe-wielder in The Mountain Movers. All will agree, she is out of this world! Please arrive early and catch this rising star. Her sets range from the sublime to the visceral. This will no doubt be very special!
